Moondog is the latest manifestation of a collaboration that began more than three decades ago. David McLeod and Avrel Seale have been friends since 1973, when both were 6 years old in McAllen, Texas. In high school, with drummer Wade Walker and keyboardist John McLeod, we formed our first cover band, The Plan, which played classic rock and blues in the Rio Grande Valley from 1985-1992. In 1990 and ’91, with drummer Jason Gray, The Plan functioned as the house band at the fabled Pepe’s on the River.
Since then, Seale and McLeod (a.k.a. “Ave & Dave”) have performed with legend Dash Crofts of Seals & Crofts fame, have backed jazz singer Rachael Price, now front-woman of phenom Lake Street Dive, and have never gone too long between jam sessions and recording projects at each other’s Austin homes.
Moondog specializes in “pop and country gold,” especially the fantastic radio fare of the ’60s and ’70s — from classic vocal duos like The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, and Seals & Crofts, to the foot-tapping country instrumentals of Jerry Reed, the crossover hits of Glenn Campbell, and others.
With Ave on guitar and Dave on bass, we then split the percussion duties, with Dave stomping out the downbeat on the cajon and Ave clipping the upbeat with the high hat. Add in our harmonizing vocals and the result is a surprisingly complete band sound coming from two dudes, and something that frankly is pretty hilarious to behold. With a mix of acoustic and electric instruments, no gig is too large or too small for Moondog.
Let us play for ya!
